Successful completion of the Orientation to Prescribing by Pharmacists program is a requirement for all pharmacists who wish to apply for authorization to prescribe in Newfoundland and Labrador. Please note that this course was last updated in 2023 with the associated revisions to the regulations and standards of practice related to prescribing.

The program describes the minimum expectations for pharmacists involved in prescribing to patients as detailed in the NLPB Standards of Practice – Prescribing by Pharmacists.  The Standards are intended to promote consistency in the provision of this service to the people of this province.

Learning Objectives

After completing this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Define the categories of prescribing by pharmacists in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Explain the requirements for pharmacists to prescribe
  • Describe the limitations and exclusions to prescribing
  • Describe the general and specific practice standards that pharmacists must adhere to when prescribing

This program is not accredited, but may be submitted as a 1.5 CEU self-assigned learning activity.
