Successful completion of the Orientation to Prescribing by Pharmacists program is a requirement for all pharmacists who wish to apply for authorization to prescribe in Newfoundland and Labrador. Please note that this course was last updated in 2023 with the associated revisions to the regulations and standards of practice related to prescribing.

The program describes the minimum expectations for pharmacists involved in prescribing to patients as detailed in the NLPB Standards of Practice – Prescribing by Pharmacists.  The Standards are intended to promote consistency in the provision of this service to the people of this province.

After completing this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Define the categories of prescribing by pharmacists in Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Explain the requirements for pharmacists to prescribe
  • Describe the limitations and exclusions to prescribing
  • Describe the general and specific practice standards that pharmacists must adhere to when prescribing

Service as a Pharmacist-in-Charge: A Position of Responsibility and Accountability

Successful completion of the Service as a Pharmacist-in-Charge program is a requirement for all pharmacists who wish to apply for authorization to be designated as a pharmacist-in-charge.

Learning Objectives

After completing this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Outline the regulatory context for the title “pharmacist-in-charge”.
  • Discuss the qualifications for the pharmacist-in-charge designation.
  • Discuss the duties and responsibilities of the pharmacist-in-charge.
  • Outline the NLPB Quality Assurance Program as it applies to pharmacy practice sites.
  • Describe the expectations and procedures when opening, buying/selling or closing a pharmacy.
  • Describe the expectations and procedures when renovating or relocating a pharmacy.

An Orientation to the Standards for the Safe and Effective Provision of Opioid Agonist Maintenance Treatment

Successful completion of the program An Orientation to the Standards for the Safe and Effective Provision of Opioid Agonist Maintenance Treatment is a requirement for all pharmacists who wish to apply for authorization to participate in the provision of opioid agonist maintenance treatment (OAMT) in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The program describes the minimum expectations for pharmacists involved in OAMT as detailed in the NLPB Standards for the Safe and Effective Provision of Opioid Agonist Maintenance Treatment.  The Standards are intended to promote consistency in the provision of this service to the people of this province.

The post-test for this program is based on both the content of the modules as well as the learning activities. A passing grade is 70% or above.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the purpose of the Standards for Safe and Effective Provision of OAMT
  • Apply the NLPB Code of Ethics when making decisions regarding OAMT participation
  • Explain the requirements for pharmacy professionals who wish to participate in OAMT services
  • Describe the operational standards that must be in place in order for a pharmacy to register for OAMT services
  • Describe the general and specific practice standards that pharmacy professionals must adhere to when providing OAMT treatments such as buprenorphine/naloxone, methadone, and slow release oral morphine.
  • Navigate clinical practice guidelines for treatment of opioid use disorder to inform clinical decisions related to provision of OAMT.
  • Describe how to respond to special circumstances such as intoxication or sedation, partial consumption of doses, and missed doses.
  • Ensure continuity of care based on an understanding of the use of a secondary pharmacy or guest dosing, and provision of OAMT in hospitals.
